Customized diets for laboratory research animals
For animal lab research studies that require specially

Modified Grain-Based
Diets
LabDiet grain-based animal feeds maintain a nutritional
consistency called Constant Nutrition™. TestDiet modifies
LabDiet's standard grain-based diets by adding specific
nutritional components, such as fats, oil and cholesterol.
Additional nutrients - protein, minerals, vitamins, carbohydrates
and fiber - can also be added to tailor a diet to a particular
research study. Using a modified standard LabDiet product
allows researchers to study nutritional modifications while
using the standard diet as the research control.

Custom Grain-Based Diets
If an animal research study requires certain components
be eliminated from a standard LabDiet product, TestDiet
can create a custom grain-based diet from scratch. A custom
diet may use standard multi-nutrient ingredients, substitute
specific nutrients - such as milk casein as a protein source - or
eliminate ingredients, such as added Vitamin A or soy protein.

Purified Diets
Purified diets are consistent from batch to batch, even
years later, allowing researchers at any location to consistently
repeat and modify a study and confidently report accurate,
reliable data. Using custom purified diets, researchers
can modify the nutrient composition of diets to study the
effects of variations in nutritional components. TestDiet
purified diet ingredients are produced from human-grade
food products from reliable suppliers, with specific ingredients
and nutritional content identified and verifiably consistent.
These diets include only vitamin-free milk casein, no phytoestrogens
and are virtually bacteria free, so resulting data is extremely
accurate.

Medicated Diets
If an animal research study dictates that medications be
added to a diet, these can be added to any LabDiet grain-based
food or purified TestDiet product and then formed into pellets
for easy, accurate dosing. Common medicated diets include
those containing fenbendazole to eradicate pinworms; doxycyline,
an antibiotic used to control particular gene expression;
and "Sulfa-Trim" to treat and prevent respiratory infections
in immuno-compromised mice.
Test compounds can be homogenously blended into any TestDiet
grain-based and purified diet and produced in the form of
pellets, tablets, powder, suspendable or soluble liquids,
and gels. Diets can be color-coded for easy identification.
The addition of test compounds can be helpful in conducting
nutritional research, studying the effects of existing pharmaceuticals,
and testing new drug formulas.

Liquid Diets
Liquid diets are used for a variety of research studies,
including nutritional studies of fetal alcohol syndrome
and alcoholism. Most animal lab diets can be produced in
liquid form, with the dry powder quickly mixed in a blender
or mechanical mixer with water, ethanol or another liquid
and stored for several days. TestDiet liquid diets can be
formulated for any animal species and are stabilized against
microbial growth.
